This newsletter was supposed to go out on Wednesday, but I was bedridden with an allergic reaction. My whole face and throat were swollen. I have no clue what I’m allergic to; every time I’m in New York, I have some adverse reaction to the city. The last time, it was a poisonous spider bite. I’m always looking forward to going home.
Yesterday, I visited the galleries along Henry St., which were excellent. The proximity of the galleries, along with the ambitions of the artists, makes for a stroll that feels a bit like a treasure hunt. I especially liked the shows at Situations (Delaney Lee) and Long Story Short (Dabin Ahn, Daniel Um, and Michelle Nguyen). I was also excited to run into an exhibition of Judy Chartrand’s dioramas at Diana NYC. The gallery is a collaboration between three galleries, including Vancouver’s Macaulay + Co. I’m always a bit embarrassed when I don’t know about cool Canadian art things happening, and I had no clue Macaulay + Co had a space in NYC. When I asked the gallery attendant if Chartrand had done a series of paintings on plates, she shrugged and said, “Maybe.” I’m also allergic to that kind of attitude.
Below is a fast and loose guide to galleries and places to eat in Downtown Manhattan. I always feel stuck in places like Chelsea without knowing where to grab a bite between galleries; this map is my band-aid solution: nyc galleries + snacks
