I’m off to New York tomorrow for Armory and September openings—expect a rundown in your inbox soon. Here’s what’s been happening in the (Canadian) art world:
From an anonymous tip: It does look like Canadian Art will be returning in some form—or at least trying to. I looked over a business deck for the proposed “rebirth” of the once illustrious mag. From what I saw, the new missions and vision centre inclusion as their motivating factor. I don’t have the whole deck, so all of this is to be taken with a grain of salt, but I’m looking for more of the “why” and the “how” in regards to the magazine’s new purpose. Also–the magazine closed so abruptly and burned quite a few employees and community members. How do they plan to rebuild trust in the community?
The more writing and media about Canadian art, the better. Reach out or comment where you get your art news + any writers I should be reading.
News from Artscape: A group of Artscape Workers have published an open letter that outlines their abrupt termination without severance. One of the letter's more distressing and poignant lines reads: “Thrown suddenly into a state of instability, we need fair and timely compensation. Many of us now struggle to afford rent or groceries. At the same time, we worry about the future of the City’s vital arts spaces and the communities that rely upon them.”
The Fall colour report is out from Ontario Parks! It doesn’t feel like it today, but Fall is coming. I was hiking two weeks ago in Charleston Lake and noticed the changing colours. Nature…a true artist.
I love all the little art objets from 100% Silk’s latest (first?) exhibition in their space—which used to be Erin Stumps Projects. Go visit! Check out Franz Kaka while you’re up there, and then have one of the best dinners in the city at Dotty’s.
If you’re wondering about today's newsletter's subject line and preview, it doesn’t mean anything; I just thought it would make a great t-shirt. The front would read ART IS THE ANSWER, and printed on the back in small letters would be, “But what is the question?” I had to Google to make sure I didn’t subconsciously plagiarize Jenny Holzer.
See you in nyc!
