Last night, Art Forecast hosted an in-person event for collectors and subscribers in Toronto. We ended the night at 915 Dupont, my favourite new bar. Stay tuned for more IRL content.
No preamble from me today—just news!
Ambera Wellmann x Mugler. Wellmann’s Rubenesque paintings made an appearance in the Fall 2024 collection. Beautiful!
In 2019, while working at Teen Vogue, I wrote about Darby Milbrath’s painting being turned into an intricately beaded jacket for Celine. Jeanine Brito recently collaborated with Nina Ricci. These are precisely the fashion houses I would pair each artist with—they make perfect sense.
I’m nosy, so I love these “what sold breakdowns.” Something to note: It feels like there’s a lot more transparency in blue chip and $100k + pieces and more opacity in emerging artist pricing. This makes it harder to introduce new people to collecting.
There’s a book controversy that directly relates to last week’s chess newsletter, which featured Julian Wasser's photograph of Eve Babitz and Marcel Duchamp playing chess. The issue? It’s being used on a Joan Didion cover. I have no clue why they would do that—and neither do the many people weighing in online. Insult to injury is that Wasser photographed Didion, resulting in some of the most iconic images of the author.
The British Museum posted a TikTok with the following advice: “Girlies if you’re single and looking for a man, this is your sign to go to the British Museum’s new exhibition Life in the Roman Army and walk around looking confused you’re welcome x.” People were not happy about it.
“Sotheby’s Modern and contemporary evening sale in London makes 40% less than last year.” I feel like there’s always so much talk about if the market is down or not. The answer is becoming more apparent. See this line in
’s recent newsletter on the LA fairs: “One director remarked that he was selling the same number of paintings as in the past but at price points in the six figures rather than in the low seven figures.” In other words, things aren’t dire. They’re just not quite as strong as they have been in the last few years.Every time I see Suyi Xu’s paintings on Instagram, I save them—my entire saved folder has accidentally become a shrine to the architectural-palimpsest paintings. Xu’s solo exhibition opens at Europa in NYC tonight! Run, don’t walk.
Vancouver Art Blog recommends ordering a copy of Le Chauffage—an artist-run publication based in Brussels and Vancouver. Consider me influenced. Their second issue includes work by Moyra Davey, Lotus L. Kang, Stephen Waddell, Ken Lum, and more.
An Art Forecast exclusive:
Michael Thompson officially joins the roster at Franz Kaka. The artist has paintings in the upcoming GTA 2024 Triennial Exhibition at MOCA. Congratulations to both!
Have a great week art lovers x
