I never need a reason to buy art, but the holidays are always a convenient excuse. Here are some prints from Canadian artists that will make a thoughtful gift for anyone in your life—adding some original (editioned) art to their space and supporting artists at the same time.
This is the first of three Canadian Art Forecast gift guides. The following will be on books, and then objects.
1—Eve Tagny “NW, Landscape.” Photorama.
Eve Tagny has recently shown at Franz Kaka and just signed with Cooper Cole— making her an emerging artist to watch. This photograph is part of TPW’s annual fundraiser. I’m surprised there are any still available. $120
2—Mia Sandu, “Bawdy II.” Patel Brown Gallery.
”Sandhu's present work celebrates females who have fought for freedom from the shackles of self-consciousness and are victorious in their new, natural, and unrepressed consciousness.” $365.
3—Marianne Sung, “Winter Dream.” Ninth Editions.
This isn’t a print, but still begs inclusion because of how great it is. Marianne Sung’s work sells so quickly that I often miss out on the chance to collect my favourite pieces. $220
4—Keiran Brennan Hinton, “September Kitchen.” Art for Change.
Despite my obvious reasons for adding this (I live with the artist, to start), this print goes to a good cause: the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Keiran Brennan Hinton so deftly captures the specific light in Eastern Ontario at the end of summer—flooding me with nostalgia. I’m standing in this kitchen as I write this. $400 USD.
4—Caitlyn Murphy, “Garment Bags.”
Caitlyn Murphy elevates the everyday into something special. This print, from her series on laundry mats, sheds light on a detail that is often-overlooked. I love the colours, array of texture, and the intimacy of the written receipts. $125
5—Marcel Dzama, “And now we have Mother Nature on the run.” Platform Art.
Do you have someone you really like? Buy them this Marcel Dzama print from David Zwirner’s Platform Art for $2500.
