How to create one of the most important art world documents
Artist CVs are a central aspect of building and maintaining a successful art career. It feels a tad professional for the art world to be so obsessed with a fancy version of a resume, but it is.
Collectors, gallerists, and curators all look to CVs to learn about an artist’s career trajectory and determine whether to include them in an exhibition or collect their work. Collectors are looking for artists with reliable track records: Do they have a solo exhibition every couple of years? Have they been included in any institutional exhibitions? Are there conversations around their work via press?
For this reason, it’s important to have an updated version of your CV readily available on your website. This signals a certain level of art world professionalism and allows people to easily find out information about your art career in one place. Below, I’ve outlined dos and don’ts when writing an artist CV and provided a link to a customizable template.
