I’m welcoming myself back from my unannounced newsletter sabbatical by trying something different. I started Canadian Art Forecast four years ago—and a lot has changed in that time (to say the least). I’m not sure the exact format I’ll land on for this newsletter, but I know I want it to be more informal and frequent. Plus, more international. Thanks for sticking around for what it will become.
What I’m thinking about today:
Larissa Lockshin’s solo exhibition at Europa in NYC opens today. I saw her work at Felix Art Fair in LA and seriously considered buying one. They shimmer in person, painted on satin, and have the exact mix of restraint and primal energy I look for in abstraction.
This painting by Michael Thompson is so good. It reminds me of the little “crystal” swans I would collect as a child. The small scale of the work, in tandem with the small scale of the goose head ornament from a car, just feels “right”. Go read Michael’s compelling write-up of the painting on his Instagram post.
Sarah Nicole Prickett on Jacqueline Rose is the first thing I read this morning. I miss reading Sarah frequently. I could read another 1000 words on her intro alone. While the review is in-depth and compelling, it’s SNP’s analogies that delighted: a rock turns into a rose, a deer is a mother, writing on a slip of carbon paper. Welcome back Bookforum!
Jane Corrigan has joined Pangée’s program. Great news for both of them—and for us as well, who will get to experience more of Corrigan’s whimsical compositions.
Some disappointing news coming from Artscape, which is entering receivership. I’ll be keeping my eye on the news as it develops, specifically how it will impact artists in Toronto. @amelia.np.e shares their first-hand thoughts, frustrations, and hopes w/r/t to the news. I agree that the future of the island school is most concerning—it’s one of my favourite places in the city, and imperative it stays an accessible place for artists to create and come together.
I recently read Study for Obedience by Sarah Bernstein and can’t stop thinking about it. If you are too, send me an email and we can have a mini book club
Let me know what you think of the above, and more soon xx
