I’m not in Miami because I started a new job this week, so I have been watching from the comfort of Instagram. The amount of content is overwhelming, which is exactly how it feels being at the Miami fairs. I’ve pulled some pieces and booths I love below. Even online, I tend to err towards artists and galleries I already know. How can art fairs be a place for discovery rather than confirmation? Something I’m currently thinking about.
If you want to hear from someone on the ground in Miami, Marlowe Granados published a fun Notes App diary of her time there.
Two interesting trends to note: Installation booths at Art Basel stand out as the strongest. In a sea of white cubicles, it’s nice to enter a world of an artist’s making. Cynthia Talmadge's installation at 56 Henry and Azza El Siddique at Bradley Ertaskiran do this particularly well.
Over at NADA (and the ICA), I’m noticing a trend of moody neo-noir paintings: darkly pigmented backgrounds, surreal figures, and mysterious tableaus. Notably, Jacob Todd Broussard, Haley Josephs, and Sasha Gordon are working in this painting style. I like it and am thinking about the WHY of this style. More soon.

Young people are collecting art. “Young people today have already shown a dedicated interest in collecting art. Last year, Art Basel reported Gen Z art collectors spent more than 30% of their net worth on buying art, and the Art Basel and UBS Survey of Global Collecting 2023 report found Gen Z collectors had the highest average expenditure on prints and digital art. This follows the data that people younger than 40 are the fastest-growing age group of art buyers, with women being the biggest spenders.”
Museums deserve better food! Frenchette Bakery opened in the Whitney. Lucky ducks. I firmly believe there’s a market for better food and interesting collabs within art museums. People need to be nourished to see art! I especially find this when I’m travelling and want to camp out in a museum for a full day.
Speaking of travel, I just got back from Chicago. I’ll do a full recap soon, but in the meantime, I highly recommend visiting the MCA Chicago, which has an amazing Faith Ringgold retrospective, Rebecca Morris painting show, and works by Lotus L. Kang in the atrium.
After almost three years in tech, I’m moving over to lead the marketing team at the Toronto Outdoor Art Fair. I couldn’t be more excited to expand my art knowledge in a new direction (non-profits, art fairs) while still being able to work directly with artists. We just released our 2023 Annual Report if you’d like to take a look. A highlight is $2 million in art sales during last year’s fair.
